Located close to the Western shore of Lake Kivu and Rwanda’s border, Kahuzi Biega National park is a conserved area close to Bukavu Town found in the Eastern Part of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The park covers an area of 6,000 square kilometres (2,300 sq mi) and derived its name from two prominent volcanoes i.e Mount Kahuzi and Mount Biega which are located within.
The park inhabits the rare species of Eastern Lowland Gorillas and is one of the biggest parks in the DR Congo with both Mountainous and lowland terrain. The biggest part of the park covers an area of 5,400 square kilometres (2,100 sq mi) with lowland terrain stretching from Bukavu to Kisangani where as the smallest covers 600 square kilometres (230 sq mi).
Annually, the park receives an average amount of rainfall i.e 1,800 millimetres (71 in) with maximum temperatures ranging from 18 °C (64 °F) and the minimum 10.4 °C (50.7 °F).

Gorilla Trekking
This is the most prominent safari activity carried out in the park and the rare Eastern Lowland Gorillas are tracked. These are the largest of all the four gorilla Sub species due to its unique features i.e large hands, short muzzle, stocky body feeding on basically fruit and vegetables just like the other Gorillas.
The Gorilla trekkingpermit costs US $400 per person interested. They also live in families with a dominant Silverback leading, followed by an Adult Female which is also followed by Black backs then the infants/ juveniles come in. You will transfer to track these in groups of 8 with a skilled ranger guide for a period of 3-5 hours and when you meet them, you will spend a period of 1-3 hours around the Gorillas.
Birding
