Can I go for gorillas before 15 years

Mountain Gorilla trekking is one of the major tourism activities all over Africa. Thousands of people come all over the world to visit Uganda, Rwanda and Congo to see mountain gorillas in their natural habitats. With the help of more sensitization and advertising starting with Diana fossel that has opened the yes of many all over the world to get to know the uniqueness of gorillas, the population of trekker is constantly on rise.

Mind you mountain gorillas are found in only four parks all over the world and these include Mgahinga gorillas national park, Bwindi impenetrable forest national park, Virunga national park and Volcanoes national park.

All the three countries where these parks are found have designed a uniform guideline including the age limit on how to go gorilla trekking in Africa. The responsible bodies on implementing these rules are Uganda wildlife authority in case of Uganda, Rwanda development board for Rwanda and Virunga national park authority for Congo

Why the age limit on gorilla trekking

Well, the question you can be there asking yourself about is why an age limit on a family vacation safari? It is important to note that mountain gorillas are closely related to the human with their DNA estimated to be above 98% similar to that human. Therefore, the airborne diseases that are very common in young children can easily also affect the gorillas and once affected by these diseases, the impact to their existence tend to be huge

Kids are not good at following guidelines

Guideline that governs gorilla trekking like not to litter in the park, keeping 7-meter distance from the closest gorilla, not making unnecessary noise and also deal with a charging gorilla needs a mature mind. Gorillas are very gentle however they might be threatened by the behaviors of the visitors, and it will take a mature mind for someone to know how to act in such a challenging situation. For instance, think of a silverback charging at a 10-year-old kid, that kid is likely to run which will make the silverback to run after her and this might harm the entire experience

Endurance for hiking(physical challenges that come with activity)

Gorilla trekking a volcano and Mgahinga national parks involve hiking huge hill while searching for gorilla. For adult who has set up his mind to meet gorillas it dowable, but for the young one who is just following their parents might reach in the middle of the journey and start crying hance affecting the experience of the whole group of tourists

Under what circumstance can a kid below 15 be allowed to go for gorilla trekking

At Bwindi national forest which is a forest and not a huge volcano mountain like the case of other three parks. At this park trekking is less challenging and therefore the uganda wildlife authority came up with two waivers where a person below 15 can go gorilla trekking

When the kid 14 and just few months to making 15

To ensure that kids below 15 don’t go trekking, you required to attach your passport copy while applying for the gorilla trekking permit. There with a written explanation from the parent to guarantee that this kid who is about to make 15 is mature enough to go for gorilla trekking. Alongside the explanation the parent will be required to attach a photo of a juvenile to prove that he/ she has a physical requirement for trekking gorilla trekking

When juveniles are to trek with their parents

On a family trip where you planning to trek as a family, a juvenile can be allowed to accompany you but under the condition that the parents sign an indemnity letter to bare all the risk the juvenile might while on the trek. The purpose of this consent is to exonerate Uganda wildlife authority for any unforeseen circumstances that might occur. However, if you are planning to go with the juvenile, you are strongly advised to higher an extra potter and wagon where the juvenile can be carried in case of any physical challenge. The wagons are available even for the elderly.

Is the end of the world when your kid doesn’t qualify for gorilla trekking?

No, failure for the kid to go gorilla trekking is not the end of anything good on your African safari. A lot of kids’ activity he or she will engage in while on your gorilla trekking experience are in place. Some of these activities include community visit where he/ she will meet the local people and engage them or cultural visit. By the time you will get done with trekking she will also have got another story to tell.

More about gorillas

Any person above 15 years of age can go gorilla trekking. There is no maximum age limit for the activity. However for the senior citizens, you will be advised to hire extra porters and the wagon and also plan in advance such that you can be allocated a gorilla family that is near for the limited trekking distance.
