Mount Karisimbi, Volcano Climbing in Rwanda and Hiking Adventures
Mount Karisimbi is an inactive volcano elevated at 4,507 metres (14,787 ft) in the Virunga Mountains along the border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The Volcano is the highest of all the 8 Virunga Mountains in the Albertine Rift and the Western arm of the Great East African Rift Valley and the 11th highest in Africa. It derived its name from the word 'amasimbi' in the Kinyarwanda local language and this means “Snow”. Between Mount Karisimbi and Bisoke lies the prominent Karisoke Research Center which was founded by Dian Fossey. At the top is snow during the dry season in the months of June, July and August.
Mount Karisimbi Volcano Hiking Process
Hiking to the top of the Mountain is quite challenging and the hike will take you 2 Days starting early in the morning for a period of 6 hours. You will transfer along the steep slopes through very thick terrain vegetation making it tough.
After a while, you will reach the summit characterized with volcanic ash and loose rock and here you will have stunning views at the Mount Muhabura an extinct volcano spanning the border of Rwanda and Uganda. After the experience, descend to the base of the Volcano.
