The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a protected area by the Government of Tanzania located about 180 km (110 mi) west of Arusha in the crater Highlands region of Tanzania. The Conservation is named after a vast volcanic caldera called Ngorongoro Crater. The crater was formed after a vast volcano exploded collapsing on it and is about 610 metres (2,000 feet) deep covering an area of 260 square kilometres (100 square miles).
