Suitably located in the Manyara Region in Tanzania, the park is the sixth largest of all the national Parks in Tanzania. It derived its name from the prominent Tarangire River which traverses the park and is a major source of water for wildlife animals that inhabit the vegetation terrain of the park. The great wildebeest migration has made the park very prominent especially in the dry season when thousands occupy the park. The park covers an area of 2,850 square kilometers (1,100 square miles) with river valleys, swamps, granitic ridges as well as Acacia Woodland, seasonally flooded grassland and Baobab trees.
Herds of Elephant and baobab trees make the park popular despite the presence of other wildlife animals like waterbuck, giraffe, dik dik, impala, eland, Grant’s gazelle, vervet monkey, banded mongoose, olive baboon, leopard, African Lion, Cheetah, caracal, Honey Badger, African Wild Dog. Those interested in watching the great wildebeest Migration should transfer to visit the park in the months of June to November in the dry season to experience the best encounters. There are about 550 bird species that can be watched in the park with numerous termite mounds that are habitats for the dwarf Mongoose.
What to Do in the Park
Explore the Baobab Trees
The Park is characterized with numerous Baobab Trees that cannot be found in any other National park in Tanzania. These are iconic unique trees in Africa and also referred to as the Trees of Life giving you exceptional photos with them in the back drop.
Game Drives
These are exceptional and can be carried out in the dry season due to the fact that many sources of water in the park dry up leaving the prominent River Tarangire being the only available source. You will have amazing game viewing experiences due to the number of wildlife animals that flood the River for drinking water. The park has four of the BIG Five animal species i.e Elephant, Lions, Cape Buffaloes, Leopards as well as other wildlife animals like giraffes, zebras, baboons, antelope and Olive monkeys. These can be spotted at ease in your car at a distance.
Birding
Other than wildlife experiences, travelers can also watch the various brilliant bird species for the park inhabits about 500 different species. The birds that can be spotted here include; Yellow necked spurfowl, Northern white crowned shrike, White faced whistling duck, Red billed hornbill, Pygmy falcon, African marsh harrier, Woodland kingfisher, Black headed heron, Rufous-tailed weaver, Ashy starling and Yellow-collared Lovebird, Hoopoes, Hornbills, White-bellied Go-away-bird and Brown parrots.
